Singapore is becoming an important center for blockchain technology, thanks to its supportive regulations and a sharp increase in crypto licenses issued in 2024.

The country issued twice as many crypto licenses in 2024 as it did the previous year, making it a leading destination for Web3 companies. According to William Croisettier, the Chief Growth Officer of ZKcandy, Singapore’s regulatory environment could make it the next major cryptocurrency hub in Asia.

A December report by ApeX Protocol highlighted Singapore’s leadership in blockchain, pointing to the country’s blockchain patents, jobs, and crypto exchanges. The report found that Singapore has 1,600 blockchain patents, 2,433 jobs in the industry, and 81 crypto exchanges, which is impressive for a country with a population of fewer than 6 million people.

By comparison, Hong Kong ranked second, with 890 blockchain patents, 1,163 related jobs, and 52 crypto exchanges.

In 2024, Singapore issued 13 Major Payment Institution (MPI) licenses for crypto exchanges, more than double the number issued in 2023. The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) granted these licenses to companies like Blockchain.com, Coinbase, Crypto.com, and Ripple in 2023.

In contrast, Hong Kong, which is considered Singapore’s main competitor, has only seven fully licensed crypto exchanges. However, Hong Kong has made progress in other areas, such as launching its first Bitcoin and Ether ETFs in April 2024. These ETFs began trading on April 30.
