Bitcoin came very close to reaching $100,000 for the first time on Thursday. This happened after Donald Trump was elected president of the United States. People believe that Trump’s presidency will make rules for cryptocurrencies more friendly.
On Thursday afternoon, Bitcoin was trading between $98,000 and $99,000 in the U.S., and it briefly reached $99,073. Bitcoin’s value has more than doubled this year, and it has gone up by about 40% since Trump was elected president two weeks ago. Many new lawmakers who support cryptocurrencies were also elected to Congress.
During his campaign, Trump said he wanted to make the U.S. the “crypto capital of the world” and suggested that the country should hold a large amount of Bitcoin.
Crypto investors believe that Trump will reduce the rules and investigations from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which has been strict about cryptocurrencies. Trump has also said he will replace the SEC chair, Gary Gensler.
In September, Trump announced a new cryptocurrency business called World Liberty Financial. Although not much is known about it, many investors see it as a good sign that Trump is interested in crypto. Billionaire Elon Musk, who is a friend of Trump, also supports cryptocurrencies.
Bitcoin’s price has quickly recovered from a low point below $16,000 in late 2022. This recovery was helped by the approval of bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in January. Before that, the SEC had tried to stop ETFs from investing in Bitcoin because they were worried about protecting investors. Now, the ETFs have allowed more people, including big investors, to buy Bitcoin.
Since Trump’s election, more than $4 billion has been invested in U.S.-listed bitcoin ETFs.
