Albanese becomes first Australian prime minister in 21 years to win re-election

Australia’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, has won a second term, defeating Liberal Party leader Peter Dutton in a decisive election. Voters chose stability over change, with Albanese’s Labor Party on track to secure a majority. Early results showed a significant shift towards the center-left party, according to projections from major news outlets like the ABC and Sky News.

Dutton, who had hoped to become Prime Minister, lost his Brisbane seat after holding it for more than 20 years. In conceding defeat, he took responsibility and congratulated Albanese, also acknowledging Ali France, the new Labor candidate.

This win makes Albanese the first Australian Prime Minister in two decades to win re-election. The victory follows a similar shift in Canada, where Mark Carney’s Liberal Party gained power. Despite challenges from global issues like Trump’s tariffs, Albanese’s steady leadership resonated with voters, contrasting with Dutton’s policy missteps during the campaign.
